You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.
Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.
Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.
He's coming anyway.
And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board.
Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses.
And, he kept coming back.... 13 more times..... And took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.
Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman,died last Wednesday at the age of 80, in Boise, ID ......May God rest his soul.....

Israel halted its military operation in Gaza for three hours in order to allow aid to enter the territory through "humanitarian corridors." This is the first planned daily ceasefire, though the BBC reports that there were at least two airstrikes during the first minutes of the pause.

After an attack on a UN school yesterday killed 30 people, Israel is mulling an Egyptian proposal for an indefininite ceasefire, which has been backed by the United States and Europe. At the same time, Israeli leaders are considering a "final push" into Gaza's urban centers to bring the operation to its conclusion.

Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Thierry Magon de La Villehuchet's sense of honor led the descendent of French army officers and an ennobled shipping family to commit suicide after he put his friends and family in a "catastrophic" financial situation by investing with Bernard Madoff, his brother said.

HONOLULU (Reuters) - U.S. President-elect Barack Obama was without electricity for 12 hours at his vacation home on Oahu following a major blackout across Hawaii's most populous island, an aide said on Saturday.

The outage on Friday night left hundreds of thousands of people, including Obama and his family, in the dark as an electrical storm rolled over Oahu.

Eartha Kitt, whose "Santa, Baby" remains the sultriest Christmas song ever recorded, died Thursday on a holiday she turned into something both naughty and nice.

Kitt, a versatile multi-media performer, engaging talk show regular and longtime human rights activist, was 81 and had been suffering from colon cancer.

Her publicist, Patty Freeman, said she died in New York with her daughter, Kitt Shapiro, at her side. Her last performance, a PBS special scheduled to air in February, was taped just six weeks ago.

Gunman dressed as Santa Claus was familiar face on block where eight died

Bruce Jeffrey Pardo, 45, the suspect in the slayings of at least eight people in Covina on Christmas Eve, had recently divorced and is believed to have lost his job, according to The Times' Ari B. Bloomekatz and Joel Rubin. He apparently lived in Sylmar but returned to his old Covina neighborhood last night fully armed and wearing a Santa costume:

Court records show that his wife divorced him last September. He "was apparently going through a bad time in his marriage," Buchanan said. Neighbors said that until earlier this year, Pardo lived in the house with his ex-wife and her three children. They were often seen walking their dog through the neighborhood. On a blustery, overcast Christmas morning, Frank Castillo, 46, stood at the yellow police tape in Covina, trying unsuccessfully to obtain information about relatives he said had been at the party. Castillo said a family member had called to tell him that his former sister-in-law, Sylvia Castillo, who is her 30s, had died in the attack. His nephew, Sal Castillo, 19, whom family members called Baby Sal, and a niece, Selina Castillo, were also in the house, he said. "I want to make sure my nephew and niece are OK," he said, choking back tears.

Travel returning to normal at O'Hare

CHICAGO (WLS) -- There were no delays on Thursday night at O'Hare Airport although about a dozen flights were canceled.

Most service is returning to normal after days of aggravation for travelers trying to reach holiday destinations.

Hundreds of people had to camp out in the terminals Tuesday and Wednesday nights after hundreds of flights were grounded.

And last night, an American Airlines plane hit an icy patch and slid off the runway. No one was hurt and passengers were put on other flights.

A study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association by Christopher King and colleagues from the University of Chicago has found a relationship between sleep quantity (hours spent asleep) and calcium build up -- or calcification -- in the arteries that supply the heart muscle with blood.

Initial claims for unemployment benefits in Colorado rose 44 percent in the week ending Dec. 13 from the same week a year ago, a lesser increase than the 60 percent national average, the Department of Labor reported Wednesday.

In Colorado, 5,917 new jobless-benefits claims were filed that week, versus 4,097 in the comparable week of 2007. The pace of new claims in the state declined slightly from the week ending Dec. 6.

The Labor Department also reported Wednesday that initial claims for unemployment benefits rose to a seasonally adjusted 586,000 in the week ending Dec. 20, a higher level than economists had expected.

An 83-year-old woman suffering from dementia who disappeared last weekend died Monday after being reunited with her family, authorities said.

Relatives had reported Almay Kanter, who last had been seen in the 5300 block of South Narragansett Avenue, missing about 4 p.m. Sunday. The Ohio woman was visiting relatives in the area.

Cheney Defends His Tenure, Adminstration's Actions

Vice President Cheney offered an unabashed defense of the Bush administration's claims of broad executive powers today, mocking criticism from Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. and saying the president "doesn't have to check with anybody" before launching a nuclear attack.

In an interview with Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday," Cheney fired back at Biden's contention that he was probably "the most dangerous vice president" in U.S. history. He also ridiculed Biden for mistakenly citing Article I of the U.S. Constitution, rather than Article II, in talking about executive branch powers during an October debate.

"If he wants to diminish the office of the vice president, that's obviously his call," Cheney said of Biden. "President-elect Obama will decide what he wants in a vice president and apparently, from the way they're talking about it, he does not expect him to have as consequential a role as I have had during my time."

Obama's Choice of Pastor Warren a 'Mistake,' Barney Frank Says

Dec. 21 (Bloomberg) -- President-elect Barack Obama shouldn't have selectedRick Warren to deliver the inaugural invocation because the evangelical pastor has made offensive comments about gays, said Representative Barney Frank.

"Giving that kind of mark of approval and honor to someone who has frankly spoken in ways I and many others have found personally very offensive, I thought that was a mistake for the president-elect to do," said Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat, today on CNN's "Late Edition."

Frank, who is openly gay, made the comments after Obama stood by his selection of Warren for the Jan. 20 inauguration. Obama, speaking at a Dec. 18 news conference, said he doesn't share Warren's views on gay rights and wants to create an atmosphere "where we can disagree without being disagreeable and then focus on those things that we hold in common as Americans."

Dec. 20 (Bloomberg) -- New England residents may want to keep their shovels handy after digging out from a snowstorm that blanketed the region yesterday and delayed hundreds of flights across the country.

After a covering estimated at about 10 inches (25 centimeters) in parts of Massachusetts yesterday, snow is expected to fall again before dawn tomorrow and deliver as much as 8 inches north and west of Boston, said Kim Buttrick, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Taunton.

Latest to join the ranks on Tuesday was Arne Duncan, 44, Mr Obama's education secretary, a 6ft 5in tall former co-captain of Harvard's basketball team who also played professionally in Australia.

General James Jones, 64, the new national security adviser, stands at 6ft 4in and was a forward for the Georgetown University team, the Hoyas. Eric Holder, 57, the nominee for attorney general, was co-captain of the Peglegs, his high school team in New York and also played at Columbia University.

Susan Rice, 45, the new United Nations ambassador, is just 5ft 3in tall but was a star basketball player at National Cathedral School in Washington, where she was nicknamed Spo – short for Sporting.

Mr Obama, 47, himself was an avid basketball player at school in Honolulu, where he was nicknamed Barry O'Bomber because of his devastating "jump shot" and would dribble and bounce a ball as he walked between classes. He struggled to make the starting line-up of his champion school team but has improved his game further over the years and still plays regularly.

All of this media attention may be going to Somali pirates' heads.

Pirates seized a wheat-laden merchant ship bound for Bandar Abbas, Iran, off the coast of Yemen yesterday. A Thai fishing boat and a Greek tanker were also hijacked in separate incidents. All told, eight ships have been taken in the past two weeks.

Other pirates are demanding ransom for the Saudi oil tanker (above) they seized on Monday. The tanker, which contains an estimated $100 million worth of crude oil, is now parked off the Somali coast near the pirate haven of Harardhere.

"Piracy is disturbing everything in Somalia, disturbing normal life, disturbing trade and commerce, disturbing the movement of humanitarian aid," the Somali prime minister, who has little power to stop the attacks, admitted Tuesday.

"It's got a lot of people's attention and is starting to have impact on the commercial side," said Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, of the pirate attacks.

"The key problem," lawyers David Rivkin and Lee Casey argue in today's Wall Street Journal, "is that America's NATO allies have effectively abandoned the historical legal rules permitting irregular fighters to be tried in special military courts."

Murders Jump in Obama’s Back Yard as Chicago Cuts Police Hires

Dec. 5 (Bloomberg) -- The recession is stinging in President-elect Barack Obama’s hometown, where the Chicago Police Department is slowing hiring even as murders increase.

Murders in Chicago rose 16 percent in the first 10 months of the year. The city’s homicide rate is triple New York’s and double that of Los Angeles. Thirteen pupils have died from gunfire since the semester began in September, said Mike Vaughn, a spokesman for Chicago Public Schools.

“When economic prospects go down, crime goes up,” said Rev. Marshall Hatch, 50, pastor of New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church on the city’s west side. “This is exactly the worst time to cut police manpower.”

The council’s decision to reduce police hiring next year by about half, to 200 officers, will save $10 million. The budget also requires firing as many as 759 workers in other departments.

Florida resident Patrick Donovan, 53, died over $393 in Wal-Mart merchandise, lying face down in the giant retailer's parking lot last week.

The Wal-Mart workers and one bystander held Donovan down, while one leaned on his back and another held down his arms and head. The police report says they told Donovan to stop fighting, and asked witnesses to call 911. By the time Donovan had stopped struggling, he had died.

"There will be no charges pressed," a spokeswoman for the city of North Myrtle Beach told theSun News. Authorities said results from an autopsy in the case could take "a few months." In the meantime, officials simply concluded, "There is no criminal act." In the words of the County Coroner's office, "As far as I am concerned there is no case here." The family of Patrick Donovan is likely to conclude otherwise, and their lawyer might like to review the court records of one Stacy Driver.

The youth allegedly grabbed the woman's purse, knocked her to the ground, stepped on her chest, then yanked on the purse, causing her head to hit the ground repeatedly.

The suspect fled to a nearby CTA Green Line station with $125, but a witness identified him, and police arrested him, officials said.

Day to Day, December 5, 2008 · Unemployment is rising and banks are disappearing. It may feel like 1929 all over again, but there's a crucial difference between the Great Depression and our fiscal crisis: We modern folk can legally drown our sorrows in alcohol.

It may not be much solace, but on Friday, Dec. 5, you can spend your few remaining dollars on a cocktail to toast the 75th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition and the legalization of alcohol.

Just past the stroke of midnight in Brooklyn, history-conscious revelers were already getting their drink on. At the Royale Bar, the bartender lined up shot glasses for the house and liberally poured the whiskey.

"To the end of Prohibition!" shouted Trevor Bataglia to the cheers of his friends.

And how does one properly observe Repeal Day? Bataglia explains that you think St. Patrick's Day, then take it one step further.

Bars and alcohol companies would be happy to see another drunken holiday on the calendar. And why not the date when the 21st Amendment ending Prohibition was ratified back in 1933? Besides, Cinco de December has a nice ring to it.
